Undefeated……whatever!

by Beav on December 30, 2007

In case you didn’t know, the New England Patriots won tonight – barely, to go 16-0 for the first time in NFL history. The last undefeated regular season team was Miami which went 14-0. I’ve been hearing all sorts of stuff this week about how the Patriots would beat the 85 Bears if they were matched up. That’s ridiculous. Comparing is pointless because football in 2007 is very different from what it was in 1985. But I have no doubt ’85 Chicago would kill the 07 Patriots. It was my birthday today (December 29th) and I was hoping that the Giants would pull off the miracle and put the Patriots down for me. They almost did, but it wasn’t to be.

I have the entire 1985 Bears season on DVD and they dominated. They won some close games, but it’s clear that they were screwing around a bit and also were navigating huge injuries to key players. Would the Patriots have gone 16-0 if Matt Cassell (backup QB) had started most of their games. Not even close. But that’s what the Bears had to deal with. It’s amazing that they had the record they did given some of the fill in scrubs that helped hold things together until the playoffs.

It’s a shame that the 1985 Bears won’t get as much credit now, but that’s why I hope that the Patriots choke in the playoffs. Even if they don’t, it may be time to pull out Superbowl XX and bask in the memory of greater days as a Bear fan. It makes it that much sweeter that the team they beat 46-10 in Superbowl XX was…the New England Patriots. Besides, the Superbowl Shuffle alone puts the debate to rest. Go Bears!

This is an illustration of what the ’85 Bears would do to the Patriots and Tom Brady.
