How to Kill a Movement

by Beav on March 15, 2008

I’ve been catching up on some blogs I follow and I came across this post entitled “How to Kill a Movement” from Jay Lorenzen, a CCC staff member at http://onmovements.com/

I hope you get a chance to read through them. I was amazed at how many tangible examples I have seen of so many on the list of “movement killers.” They’re really leadership killers – as in killing your chance to empower and multiply leaders for greater influence and multiplication of movements.

Again, it would seem a central facet of movement building is leadership that empowers and frees as opposed to leadership that is philosophically rigid and controlling in their methodology. Notice the reflection of self-serving leadership in the entire list. As leaders, we’re tempted to lead in light of ourselves in a lot of ways. This list helps expose some of those leadership behaviors for what they are – not very honoring of the mission itself or of the very real people that will end up doing most of the work.
