Just Another Conversation

by Beav on February 22, 2009

At dinner not too long ago Christine complimented Morgan for asking such good questions. She had cracked off questions such as “Are teeth bones?”, “How does the water get in the ocean?” and in the car earlier that day spontaneously asked Christine the big time question, “Mama, why did Jesus have to die?”

I echoed Christine’s affirmation and told Morgan she did ask great questions.

Morgan then looked at me and asked, “Dada, why don’t you ask as great questions as I do?”

I looked at her a little bit paralyzed and said, “I just don’t know.”

Brian, I really like your “I just don’t know” answer. I know too many parents who present themselves to their kids as some sort of cosmic geniuses who know everything about everything. I’m certainly not a shrink but it seems to me to be a healthy thing for both parent and child when parents are able to say things like “I don’t know,” “I made a mistake” and one of my personal favorites: “I’m sorry.” It also takes a pretty mature, secure parent to be able to do this. Good for you.
