McClain: The Greatness of the Kingdom (Review)

by Beav on June 24, 2009

I just read The Greatness of the Kingdom by Alva J. McClain who wrote this in 1959. From what I can tell, it’s a classic on the kingdom. If you’re one looking to pursue further study on the Kingdom of God, this could be a good resource for you. My only problem with it was a distinctively dispensational pre-millennial vibe – especially at the end during his discussion on the book of Revelation and last things. That being said, it’s the best defended argument I’ve seen for pre-millennial theology, dispensational or otherwise, that I’ve ever come across. On that front, I enjoyed reading it.

What was awesome about this book is McClain’s tracing the kingdom of God themes throughout the Old Testament Scriptures as well as the new. I think he really does the job here and it really spurs thought by the time He starts looking at Jesus and his self-understanding and the Kingdom of God.

The Kingdom of God as a specific focus of theology as seen somewhat of a renewal in the past decade. From what I can tell, McClain’s work here was a significant influence on many who have since sought to give renewed emphasis to the Kingdom of God as a significant theme for understanding Jesus and the gospels.

This reads like systematic theology so just be warned on that front, but there’s a lot of rich stuff here.
