Morgan and Mall Cops

by Beav on June 16, 2009

Christine and I went to see Paul Blart: Mall Cop at the local super saver theater a couple weeks ago. We enjoyed the rare afternoon out without the kids and were surprised by how much we enjoyed the movie.

Morgan always wants to know about any movie she hears us going to. She asks questions until she pretty much knows as much about the movie as if she had seen it herself. So one day last week she started asking questions at dinner and pretty much we kept answering questions and telling her little funny things about the mall cop movie and she was laughing hysterically. Her uncle showed her the trailer last week online and she laughed hysterically. I was putting her to bed and she started telling me how funny of a movie mall cop was (as if she’d seen it). She said, “Let me tell you about…” so she gave me the full breakdown of the movie. She has an incredibly memory so can pretty much recite anything she’s heard word for word.

A few days ago she came home from being out at a mall with Christine and came straight to me really excited and said, “Dad, we saw pretend po-po’s (a certain type of slang for police officers that someone might have let slip once)! We saw mall cops! But they didn’t have their scooters (see above).” We then had a little chat about calling them “security guards” or “security officers” (as Paul Blart himself prefers) and “po-po” really isn’t an appropriate term of respect for police officers. But of course when we see a police car on the road – which term do you think Morgan uses?

Morgan’s totally fascinated by mall cops now. Today she was at a mall with her mother and an unidentified family member. Morgan of course can’t restrain herself. “Look mom, it’s a mall cop! Does he have a scooter?” She keeps wondering aloud about where the scooter is to the point where the unidentified family member finally decides to go directly to this mall cop and ask him, “Excuse me, but this little girl would like to know if you have a scooter?” (so awesome, but I dare not cross the vow I made to not identify this relative).

Turns out this guy is really quick to identify himself as an “ex-marine” and that some guys were hassling him about being a mall cop after the movie came out and he arrested them. I love it. I feel for every mall cop out there because they must be getting the business pretty consistently ever since Paul Blart came on the scene.

Anyway, this mall cop fixation has been pretty funny. We’re keeping Morgan in the “G” world as far as movies, but we might let her watch some of “Paul Blart” when it’s out since it was a pretty clean movie. Morgan really likes slapstick & physical humor, like America’s funniest home video stype of stuff, so she might actually be into the movie if I can find a way to cut out all the violence.

Kids are awesome and so is my unidentified relative who called out a mall cop and asked him if he has a scooter (like Paul Blart). So classic!
