Trading Places

by Beav on June 21, 2009

I’ve been in the middle of an almost week-long journey of role reversal. My wife’s away working for the week and I’m full-time Mr. Mom again – this time for a good 5-6 days. I’ve actually had a great time with the kids. The biggest challenge trying to feel like it’s ok that I’m not getting tons of stuff done and to just enjoy the time with the kids.

One of the downsides of being at work a lot is you miss a lot of the “kid moments.” I’m always bummed when Christine calls me and tells me “Colin did this” or “Morgan did that.” It was fun being the one telling the other the latest family happenings.

So my highlight thus far was when the kids and I were all on the coach. Colin was getting pretty testy so I told him I’d throw on some Thomas the Train. He was excited, but getting really frustrated because it was taking me too long to get it on for him. Morgan then turns to him and says with a little bit of edge to her tone, “Patience is a virtue Colin. You have to be patient.”

She had asked me a couple months ago what our last name meant and I think in that explanation I referred to the phrase “patience is a virtue.” Good to know it sunk in and she has that kind of recall.

And my lowlight has been Colin dropping a monster load in the bathtub while he and Morgan were in there together. It was chaos for a few seconds and somehow in the process of rescuing Morgan random projectiles of poo ending up on my jeans and other places at which point I had to fight to not hurl (got a easy gag reflex).

Christine returns on Wednesday. My kids are awesome. My wife is more awesome.
